Plush Contemporary House

The atmosphere of this modern and chic residence combines natural materials and elegance. For the interior finishes, earthy colours were preferred to bring out the materials and give the house a timeless atmosphere. In addition, a more vibrant colour palette introduced as the decor, like the energizing oak veneer panel in the living room and the deep suede blue of the sofa that creates drama in the space.

01

The living room

The living room at Plush Contemporary House, its wall of veined grey marble

One wall of heavily veined grey marble carries the television and sets the register for the floor. Against it sits a low black leather sectional, a round stone coffee table, and a single blue swivel chair.

Oak veneer runs to the right of the marble and again as panelling behind the seating, warming what would otherwise be a cold room. Brass appears only as slim vertical rods and the odd shelf edge, never as an object.

Dining and kitchen

The dining table and green marble counter at Plush Contemporary House

The dining table is long and dark, with tan leather chairs down both sides, lit by slim black pendants on brass drops.

Behind it the kitchen counter is a slab of deep green marble, the one place a second stone is allowed into the plan. Sheer curtains run the full height of the window wall, so the room is bright without a direct view of the glass.

03

The study

The study at Plush Contemporary House, behind its wall of black louvres

Dark throughout, and screened rather than curtained. A wall of black louvres filters the daylight across a long desk with light set into its underside.

The joinery, the desk and the blinds are the same near-black, so the room reads as one piece with a window cut into it.

04

The main bedroom

The main bedroom at Plush Contemporary House, its fluted wall under a lit cove

A fluted dark timber wall runs behind the bed and turns at the ceiling into a curved cove, lit from within, so the light appears to come out of the joinery rather than off it.

The dressing room beyond is black glass on every front, shelves lit from the edge, with a full-height oval mirror standing free of the run.

05

The other bedrooms

A bedroom at Plush Contemporary House, its blue accent wall beside an arched stone niche

The rest of the bedrooms are pale, curved and blue. Cream joinery turns every corner with a radius rather than an edge, and the colour arrives as a floating desk, a dado, a scalloped headboard or a full accent wall.

One of them takes an arched niche out of the wardrobe run and backs it in speckled stone, which is the same idea as the living room's marble, at a tenth of the size.

Materials

The arched stone niche at Plush Contemporary House

Grey marble, green marble, oak veneer, tan leather, black glass and speckled stone, against cream joinery and timber floors.

The blue is the exception that makes the rule: one chair in the living room, one wall, one desk, one headboard. Everywhere else the material is left to do the work.
