Piramal Avyan
Nestled in uptown South Bombay, this apartment is an example of biomimicry, where nature is the inspiration. It makes fluidity an essential part of its identity through numerous curves and forms around the house. Designed for a young couple and their three children, the brief was a home that honours natural forms and balances them with hints of modern aesthetics, while keeping family traditions alive.

01
The brief

Aditi Savani knew how important it was to understand the background of the family to ensure the home is an extension of their persona, so she held multiple discussions with the family members to make sure she was able to address all their needs. Those conversations allowed her to infuse elements of nature into the space, combined with memories and personal preferences that held meaning for them.
02
The living area

Upon entering the residence, the undulating panelling and arched details adorning the walls of the living room set the tone for everything that follows. The sofas with curved silhouettes, the pared-down arched doorways and the wave-patterned carpet all depict the fluidity of sea waves within the modern living area.
With panoramic views of the Arabian Sea on one side and the Rani Bagh forest on the other, elements of nature such as wood-like materials, natural stone finish and texture paint are carefully woven into this home. The colour scheme draws deep from coral reefs, adding a refreshing and organic feel to the space. The rust orange couch introduces a pop of colour, while the textured wall creates a clean backdrop for the quirky accents.
The soaring 12-foot ceiling, a rare luxury in Mumbai, conceals a projector, which transforms the living area into an informal setup for family time.
03
The dining space

The dining space is the heart of the home, where the partially raised plinth doubles as a part-bench for the dining table, perfect for the family to have a meal together.
The client was keen on ensuring that the dining space would be suitable for all generations. Keeping this in mind, the design features a unique seating arrangement, a part-bench that seamlessly integrates with the dining table, evoking an old-world charm.
04
The master bedroom

The master bedroom is influenced by traditional art, evident in the arches carved into the wall, accented with gold foiling and floral motifs, along with three birds depicting the client's children.
It includes an end-to-end carpet with a wave-like pattern. The upholstery incorporates shades of blue, while the walls are graced in a calming white, creating a serene atmosphere.
05
The children's rooms

The children's rooms have individual styles, just like their personalities. The princess castle-themed room, in soft pastels, captures the fantasy of fairy tales for the daughter, while a vibrant blue-themed room features a bunk bed with custom ladders, a moon-like light, and lively pops of colour, designed for the young boy. The switchboard adds a playful touch, with happy expressions for when the lights are on and sad expressions when they are turned off.
These rooms are thoughtfully designed to inspire energy and creativity in their inhabitants without overwhelming the space with too many elements. There is an optimal balance of luxury and fluidity that allows the space to flow organically.
06
The elder son's room

The elder son's room has a black and white colour palette that reflects his mature personality. Hints of soft curves in the room can be noticed, with the highlight being the arched niche in red, which creates a striking contrast.
07
Sustainability

The use of no-VOC paints, water-saving bathroom fixtures, and LEED-grade energy-efficient lights demonstrates the conscious step taken towards adding sustainable features across the design.
While each room has an identity of its own, what emerges is a seamless connection between these spaces. Perhaps most importantly, this Bombay home offers something many modern residences struggle with: it feels meditative, grand and yet visually sound.
